Dick Tracy would have wanted one of these wristwatch heart monitors - if they'd cared about fitness in the '40s, that is.

With the holidays wrapping up and the New Year around the corner, another yearly tradition comes creeping, the dreaded New Year's Resolution. And with that in mind, here are a few gadgets to help motivate you to burn off that bourbon pecan pie with the chocolate-lined graham cracker crust you can't keep from scarfing down every year.

The Polar A5 Heart Rate Monitor is loaded with functions. It looks like your typical sports watch, combining exercise guidance with feedback about your workout. A built-in walking test tells you how out of shape you are and helps set up an exercise program. The A5 comes equipped with a calorie counter and several signals to help you stay inside your target heart rate. The Polar A5 retails for $109.99.

As an alternate, the Ekho E-20 Heart Rate Monitor is a similarly styled calorie-counting heart rate monitor that includes a bike mount for those who prefer to ride rather than run. Unlike the A5, it has a back light for those early morning/after dark dashes around the block. The E-20 retails for $89.95.
